The UTC offset (or time offset) is an amount of time subtracted from or added to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time to specify the local solar time (which may not be the current civil time, whether it is standard time or daylight saving time).
GMT has actually been replaced by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), although GMT remains the more commonly known of the two terms. As such, the GMT+8:00 time zone is also known (more correctly) as UTC+08:00.
UTC +8. now 12 hours ahead of New York. UTC+8 is 13 hours ahead of the time in New York when New York is on standard time, and 12 hours ahead of the time in New York when New York is on daylight saving time. UTC+8 does not change between summer time and winter time.
Prior to 1972, this time was called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) but is now referred to as Coordinated Universal Time or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). It is a coordinated time scale, maintained by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). It is also known as "Z time" or "Zulu Time".
UTC is 8 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time (e.g., 0000 UTC is 1600 PST the previous day, while 1200 UTC is 0400 PST the same day), and 7 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time (e.g., 0000 UTC is 1700 PDT the previous day, while 1200 UTC is 0500 PDT the same day).
To convert 18:00 UTC (6:00 p.m.) into your local time, subtract 6 hours, to get 12 noon CST. During daylight saving (summer) time, you would only subtract 5 hours, so 18:00 UTC would convert to 1:00 p.m CDT. Note that the U.S. uses a 12-hour format with a.m. and p.m.
To convert Universal Time (UT or UTC) to Eastern Standard Time (EST), subtract five hours from UT. Examples: 07:49:55 UT is the same as 02:49:55 EST, or 2:49:55 a.m. EST.
Weather forecasts and maps all use UTC to avoid confusion about time zones and daylight saving time. The International Space Station also uses UTC as a time standard. Amateur radio operators often schedule their radio contacts in UTC, because transmissions on some frequencies can be picked up in many time zones.
UTC is a time, not a zone. The time zones that sometimes use UTC are the Greenwich Mean Time zone and the Western European Time zone. They cover a small part of eastern Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Great Britain, Portugal, and West Africa.
The main reason UTC is considered more accurate is that it uses the rotation of Earth and atomic clocks for measurements. Another important point is that UTC does not observe Daylight Saving Time to maintain a consistent time system, unlike GMT.
