What states are getting rid of daylight savings time? ›

Nearly a dozen states have legislation in the works to switch to year-round standard time: Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Oregon, whose Senate voted Monday in favor of a bill that would end daylight saving time.

Daylight saving time will begin for 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time, when our clocks will go ahead one hour, part of the twice-annual time change that affects millions, but not all, Americans.

In November 2018, Californians overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to allow the Legislature to change the daylight saving time period. But the measure didn't actually end it. There have been several failed attempts since then to abolish the time change by making daylight saving time permanent.

In the early 1970s, America was facing an energy crisis so the government tried an experiment. Congress passed a law to make Daylight Savings Time permanent year round, but just for two years. The thinking was more sunlight in the evening would reduce the nation's energy consumption.

According to the online museum WebExhibits, the 2 a.m. change was also a convenient middle ground between midnight—when changing the clocks would require the date switching back to the previous day—and later in the morning, when early shift workers and churchgoers might be affected.

The Texas House Votes to Permanently Stay on Daylight Saving Time. In April 2023, In House Bill 1422, by a vote of 138-5, the Texas Legislature said goodbye to changing your clocks twice a year.

DST was reinstated again in World War II and then brought back permanently in 1966. Arizona tried it out, but ultimately decided DST wasn't for desert dwellers — more sunlight in the evening means more air conditioning, more energy used, more misery… we'll pass.

Attempts to do away with the time change in North Carolina have so far been unsuccessful. Currently, states are allowed to pass laws making standard time permanent, but they cannot adopt year-round daylight saving time without congressional authorization.

Most of Indiana is on Eastern Standard Time, except for 12 counties in northwest and southwest Indiana that have remained or changed to Central Standard Time. According to the Indiana General Assembly, a bill exempting Indiana from daylight saving time was introduced into the assembly for the 2024 session.
