How to make keto corn dogs

Low-Carb Keto Corn Dog Recipe - Only 5 g Net Carbs - Ketofocus (5)
Corn dogs are a good old fashion American food that reminds me of Summer and days at the county fair. We used to get these humongous hand dipped corn dogs at the fair. They had a crunchy outer cornbread crust and a juicy hot dog in the middle.

This recipe for keto corn dogs has helped me relive those days! These keto corn dogs have a crunchy breading layer that is made out of fathead dough. It is similar to the texture of the corn breading found in regular corn dogs, just without the corn. And of course, you can’t forget the hot dog inside. That hasn’t changed much from a traditional corn dog.

These keto corn dogs are easy to make and can be made into little bite sized versions that are a fun party food at potlucks or gatherings. You can cut the hot dogs in half to make mini keto corn dogs or you can cut them into small chunks to make finger food. They make the perfect low carb appetizer!

Let’s get started!

  • How many carbs are in a corn dog?

If you purchase corn dogs in the freezer section at your grocery store, you will find they are not keto friendly.

One corn dog can have about 20 grams of carbs in it and only 1 gram fiber. You will find these number are similar or go up if you were to buy a corn dog from the county fair or your local corn dog truck. The bottom line is, 1 traditional corn dog has a full days worth of carbohydrates to someone following the keto diet.

Carbs in a keto corn dog

By changing out the corn dog breading to a keto friendly breading, we can lower the amount of carbs in a keto corn dog to 6.6 grams net carbs.

    The keto corn dog breading

    Low-Carb Keto Corn Dog Recipe - Only 5 g Net Carbs - Ketofocus (26)

The breading for keto corn dogs is a layer of fat head dough wrapped around the hot dog. Once the dough is fried in oil, it gets browned and has a very similar appearance and texture to a regular corn dog.

Even though these low carb corn dogs aren’t made with cornmeal or flour, you can still have that corn flavor if you miss that little sweetness in your corn dog. Many have added corn extract and a few pinches of sweetener to their fathead dough to give it more of that authentic hand dipped corn dog flavor.

If you are looking for some cornbread extract, you can find some on Amazon. One of my favorite brands is by oooflavors. Their extracts are keto approved and are concentrated so you only need a few drops of cornbread extract to give these keto corn dogs that authentic flavor.

    Are hot dogs keto?

    Yes, hot dogs are keto.

If you are trying to go the more natural route and avoid the mystery meat that might be inside a generic hot dog, then reach for a hot dog that is all natural, 100% beef.

Most hot dogs are very low in carbs. But some do contain added sugars so make sure you read the nutrition label to find a package of hot dogs that don’t contain sugar or have the lowest net carb count.

We like to use Nathans or Hebrew National. Both are 100% all beef hot dogs and contain no by-products or sugar.

If you are looking for a hot dog made with grass-fed beef, try these hot dogs from Teton Waters Ranch. I have been able to locate these at my local grocery store and they make the juiciest hot dogs!

    Corn dog sticks

    Low-Carb Keto Corn Dog Recipe - Only 5 g Net Carbs - Ketofocus (27)

You can purchase bamboo corn dog sticks on Amazon.

They are available for purchase in packs of 100 so you can enjoy multiple batches of corn dogs before you run out.

You don’t have to have a corn dog stick to enjoy the delightful flavor of this keto corn dog. Simply wrap the dough around the entire hot dog and fry. Of course the stick is useful because it gives you something to hold onto while you eat. Without the corn dog stick, your hands could get greasy, but it’s still worth it!

What oils are safe for frying on keto?

    Low-Carb Keto Corn Dog Recipe - Only 5 g Net Carbs - Ketofocus (28)

I recommend using an oil that has a high smoke point when you fry keto corn dogs.

Avocado oil, ghee, beef tallow and lard have higher smoke points ranging from 450 to 375. A smoke point is how hot the oil can get before it starts to smoke. Once it smokes, it becomes unstable and can turn rancid.

Oils that are heated passed their smoke point should not be consumed as they can cause free radical damage in the body due to their instability. Vegetable oil, canola oil and peanut oil are also suspected to cause free radical damage without being heated. It’s best to avoid cooking with these oils.

Air fryer keto corn dog instructions

    Low-Carb Keto Corn Dog Recipe - Only 5 g Net Carbs - Ketofocus (29)

Keto corn dogs can be cooked in the air fryer!

This is an easy and convenient way to make corn dogs without messing with a skillet and bunch of oil splatterings.

To make keto corn dogs in an air fryer:

    • Assemble the corn dogs as instructed above in the recipe
    • Lay down a sheet of parchment paper in the air fryer to keep the dough from melting down. Try not to cover the entire air fryer tray with parchment paper as you want to keep the air circulating so the heat cooks the corn dog from all angles.
    • Cook the keto corn dogs in the air fryer at 360 degrees for 10 minutes total.
    • After 5 minutes, you will need to flip the corn dog to get the underbelly baked since air can access that side as it is laying on the parchment paper.

    Dip your corn dog

    Low-Carb Keto Corn Dog Recipe - Only 5 g Net Carbs - Ketofocus (30)

What is your favorite sauce to dip your corn dogs in?

The most popular are ketchup and mustard. Mustard in keto approved; however, most ketchups contain added sugar. Try to find one that is unsweetened. My favorite is by Primal Kitchen.

I purchase Primal Kitchen Unsweetened Ketchup from Amazon. But I noticed that many grocery stores are starting to carry this brand as well as other unsweetened, sugar-free ketchups.

Mayonnaise and BBQ sauce are other popular choices for dipping your keto corn dogs into. Primal Kitchen makes both an avocado mayonnaise and unsweetened BBQ sauce that are delicious and can be found at Thrive Market as well.

Other Keto Hot Dog Recipes to Try

If you are a fan of hot dogs (like my kids are), you should try some other keto hot dog recipes. Try this recipe for keto hot dog buns. These buns are gluten-free and NOT made from fathead dough! The bread rises like a traditional hot dog bun.

    7. I used your Keto Fat Head Pizza Crust dough recipe, cooked the hotdogs, (I uses an air fryer) , rolled out the dough, cut it in 8 sections then wrapped them. If you want one on a stick, put it in.. Placed on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Then baked in the oven at 375 for 13 minutes. If you want Chili Dogs add Chili powder to the dough. Make your favorite dip for dipping as you eat. Left overs warmed in air fryer or oven.

    9. I rarely come back to comment on a recipe but this one deserves it. Being keto for five years I’d really been missing the occasional corn dog, so I tried this recipe and it did not disappoint! The only thing I did different was after I browned them in the oil (which happened quickly!) I then put a few at a time in my air fryer just to let them cook a little longer without necessarily extra browning. I don’t know if that was necessary but I do know they were delicious!

I’ve made them before where you freeze them prior to frying so the cheese doesn’t melt too quickly but might not need to because of the dough🤔

    15. I made this recipe and I used chicken weiners because they are a great brand and made with free range chickens. So I forgot to add the sweet corn extract to the dough so after I had wrapped the weiners I didn’t bother with any sticks, I just put a couple drops of the sweet corn extract on the outside and I rubbed it all around the outside of the dough. I skipped the xanthan gum because I was following an older recipe that didn’t call for it, next time I’ll definitely use it because I’m sure it would give the dough a little more ply-ability when the dough begins to get colder I found it was more difficult to wrap around the weiners. I did my dough in a food processor and it was the best fat head dough that I’ve ever made and with the left over dough I used it to make beavertails aka elephant ears aka deep fried dough with sugar(lol) I used cinnamon and Allulose immediately after they came out of the oil and I also used some confectioners sweetener and cocoa powder and just some confectioners sweetener. They came out amazing!! I never expected to be making my dessert at the same time! But it worked out really well I cooked the dough first and then I cooked the corn dogs so that I wouldn’t have my beavertails tasting like weiners.

Ran out of avocado oil so did the last 2 in olive oil. Still great. I used 400 gram brick of mozzarella. Had enough dough for 9 smaller wieners. Way easier then I thought it would be.
