Oi Gente!

Chicken Stroganoff, or estrogonofe de frango as we say in Portuguese, is a very common dish in Brazil that’s part of everyday life. But, as some of you might already know, the original stroganoff recipe is actually Russian.

The original version of the dish was made with sautéed pieces of beef and sour cream. Since its creation, the original recipe has become popular all over the world, and each countries’ variation of the recipe can differ significantly from the original.

Some recipes like to cut the beef into strips rather than cubes, others will use some kind of alcohol, sometimes vegetables are added to the mix, and even pickles are found in some recipes! Different variations will use a different blend of seasonings, too… and depending on which version you try, it can be served over pasta, potatoes or rice. I don’t know about you, but I’m down to to try them all!

In Brazil, we love stroganoff so much that in addition to chicken stroganoff, we have two other variations: beef, and shrimp. And we almost always serve it over white rice with potato sticks (batata palha) sprinkled on top. But it’s also very common to serve it over a baked potato, too.

Brazilian Chicken Stroganoff: A Classic Everyday Dish

There are many dishes that remind me of my childhood, and this Brazilian Chicken Stroganoff recipeis certainly one of them. Naturally, when I moved from Brazil, I made sure to bring my mom’s recipe with me and integrate it into my rotation of comfort food cooking. Priorities… I know!

One of the things I love about this recipe is how creamy and decadent it is, yet it’s so easy and quick to make. The other thing I love is the fact that I didn’t have to make any adaptations to make it fit my new life abroad in the United States. All ingredients in this recipe are easy to find pretty much anywhere in the world.

This Brazilian chicken stroganoff recipe is our go-to stroganoff for our weekly rotation because (hello!!) chicken is cheaper. Plus, this chicken stroganoff recipe is slightly easier to make than Brazilian beef stroganoff. We save that one to make occasionally on weekends, or as a family meal—it’s more of a special treat.

We always serve Brazilian chicken stroganoff with Brazilian white rice because the rice soaks up all that wonderful creamy sauce. And, to make it fun, we top it with batata palha potato sticks which give the dish a salty crunch! It’s sooooooo good!!

I seriously invite you to take this recipe and share it with your loved ones. Make your kitchen a Brazilian home, even just for one night.I hope you love this recipe as much as I do!

Beijinhos xx

Prep. For this recipe, I like to dice the onion more on the small size. As for the chicken, you want to make sure you cut it into cubes that are roughly the same size. Then, just season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Aaand that is pretty much all the prep you need to do.

Saute. Place a large heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven over medium to high heat. Add the butter, and let it melt. Then, you’ll want to cook the chicken until the pieces begin to brown.

Next, add the onion and cook it until it’s transparent. Then, add the garlic and cook until fragrant.

Make the chicken stroganoff sauce. Add the tomato sauce and the ketchup to the pan, and let them come to a simmer.

Finish with cream. Pour in the cream, stir, and let it simmer uncovered for 5 minutes… then sprinkle in some parsley to finish it off!
