The source of the plague that wiped out every living mammal with a Y chromosome except Yorick Brown, Ampersand, and Doctor Matsumori is never fully explained.

The true cause is this: The Dreamtime changed, which caused males to die across the Earth. More specifically, Yorick's Earth is one of the many Earths under the domain of the Endless, including Dream and Death, and a change in Dream's realm unleashed the plague on Yorick's Earth.

It premiered on September 13, 2021, on FX on Hulu, and stars Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Ben Schnetzer, Olivia Thirlby, and Amber Tamblyn. It received generally positive reviews from critics, but was cancelled in October 2021, after one season.

FX chairman John Landgraf said Thursday that he wasn't happy about the call, but a “really steep decline” in audience over the course of the show's run led to the cancellation.

Unfortunately, it was not picked up and will not be returning to tell more of its story. Series creator Eliza Clark took to Twitter to break the news to fans who were hoping the show would get at least one more season.

Nothing really to add. I read the graphic novel, and it had some flaws, but this series is a complete bastardization of the book. The books followed Yorick, Ampersand, Hero, and 355 through a United States now devoid of all men (except one). This show is basically the same plot but devoid of entertainment.

It was revealed by Mike that the illness they assumed was the effects of the virus was in fact attributed his weakened immune system having been in space for more than 3 years.

Yorick doesn't believe her, and realizes that Alter wants to die, and has been trying to get him, the last man, to kill her. He refuses to do so and gives her to her troops, who leave Paris. In the end, Hero and the Beths are reunited with a devastated Yorick and find out about 355's death.

Despite critical success, "The Last Man on Earth" was canceled after its fourth season, leaving fans without a season 5. A cliffhanger ending in season 4 set the stage for a new group of survivors to join the main characters, only to be wiped out by the virus.
