I like countries like Japan where you don't end up doing silly things like SWALLOWING ALL OF EUROPE like France does or poland+lit land. Now of course you could play Japan and take the mandate of heaven i guess, but that's not my thing. Also why is army tradition so asinine to keep up? Even with a passive army tradition and quality and the aristocratic reform it still is hard to get up and hard to keep up.

I mean, nothing forbids you to swallow all of Europe as Japan and keep the natural borders of France and focusing on developping your land. This is just how you chose to play it, but military nation mid-size are famous for : Songhaï, Prussia and Népal.

I don't know if Bohemia can be considered as medium-sized country. But I like its militaristic national ideas (infantry combat, reduced shock damage receive)

Pretty much every country can lead to a fun playthrough without blobbing.
Reject blobbing. Embrace pretty borders.

If you want a small/medium nation that has good military ideas, look no further than Khorosan:
+10% Morale and +15% Cav Combat -- as Traditions
+0.5 Yearly Army Tradition
+10% Manpower
Their other ideas (+1 diplo rep, +1 legit, +10% goods produced, +2 tolerance of TF, +10% trade efficiency and -5% tech cost) are also pretty nice. If they had any core creation cost, people would be playing them all the time.
They also can break free of Timurid's pretty easy, have lots and lots of cores and are located in a VERY central position and can easily dominate the crucial Persian tradenode.

Mewar in India has pretty solid army ideas, they have access to the Rajput regiments and they can eventually form Rajputana that also has good military ideas.

Shimazu is pretty good.
Another unique one would be Palawa. The only country with both + shock damage as well as + fire damage. It has Morale and high manpower recovery and an extra mil pip for good measure.

Rassids, Serbia, Aq Qoyunlu, the Isles, (forming) Ireland, Teutonic Order, Butua, Songhai all have good military ideas, though some of them have difficult starts.

Since this thread is still going, let me add one other nation to the list of mid-/small nations with good military ideas:
Kazan
+20% Cav Combat Ability
+25% Manpower
+1 Maneuver
+ 15 Fort Defense
+50% Cav Flanking Ability
Also gets 25% CCR, 10% AE Impact and 10% Trade. Just amazing.
That +25% manpower needs special mention because in my experience, Hordes are somewhat manpower poor because of razing and because they begin on trash land for the most part.
Starts with a gold mine; Starts far enough away from Ottomans that you won't get eaten, but close enough to be able to dismantle them before they get going too much; has Orthodox, Catholics, Tengri and Shia near by if you want religious options.

They're less numerous and very frontloaded, but Dithmarschen is pretty solid.
Traditions:
10% Morale of Armies
-10% Shock Damage Taken
1st idea:
+10% Infantry Combat Ability
Govt. Type:
5% Morale of Armies
The rest of their ideas are mostly economic, including Goods Produced. You also get a very fun mission tree with, among other things, Permanent Claims on all of Russia.
