How can I learn anatomy easily for drawing? ›

Use an anatomy book to understand what's below the surface but think about each muscle in 3D. Don't draw the muscles as a series of lines. Draw them as sculpted spheres, boxes and cylinders. With that being said, you don't always have to actually draw spheres and boxes on the page.

Here are some of my sketchbooks where I make anatomical drawings and scribble notes about proportions and construction of a human body, head and face. Doing such exercises on a regular basis is a great way to learn anatomy for artists.

Some people take up to 3 years to master anatomy completely. It depends on your specific case and how long you've studied for. A student who studies 12 hours a week generally learns faster than those that only spend 4 hours, but it depends how efficiently and easily you've been able to grasp the information learnt.

When you're just starting out, you only need basic anatomy. So, instead of learning all the complexity of the pelvis for example, look at the simple idea of the pelvis, a very simple idea of the egg-shaped rib cage, a very simple idea of the head. It's enough to figure out where those are and what their angles are.

You can if you're not drawing characters or any figures representing a human like figure because if you are then you'll probably have a hard time drawing said figures. But you can still learn to draw without having to be anatomically knowledgeable. Architecture is an example of such drawings without the use of anatomy.

In a college or university setting, when learning anatomy, students usually have difficulty trying to visualize different aspects of the human body, which inherently are too complex or abstract to fully understand without the aid of useful visual explanations or visualizations.
