Read on to learn everything you need to know about Yellowstone Season 5, part 2, and the latest on Kevin Costner’s involvement.

Yellowstone is Paramount Network’s modern-day Western drama created by Taylor Sheridan (Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown). The show centers around the Duttons, the owners of the largest ranch in Montana, and follows the family’s struggles to protect their land from land developers, an Indian Reservation, political rivals, and other threats. Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille and more star.

Last May, Paramount announced that Yellowstone was ending after Season 5. The network also revealed that it green-lit two spinoff series, 1994 and 2024, to join its growing franchise — which already consists of 1883, 1923, Lawmen: Bass Reeves and the upcoming 6666 series. Matthew McConaughey was in talks to star in one of the upcoming spinoff series, potentially bringing some of the original cast to the new show. However, it’s unknown whether that’s still happening.

Filming for Yellowstone’s fifth and final season commenced in May. Costner told People in June that he would be open to returning to finish the series — but only under certain conditions. “I’ve always felt that…It might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family,” the Horizon star explained. “And if that happens, I would step into it if I agreed with how it was being done.”

Yellowstone is returning whether Costner is involved or not. Here’s when the final batch of episodes will debut on Paramount.

How Many Episodes Will Be In Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2?

The second part of Yellowstone Season 5 will have six episodes. Sheridan previously told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2023 that he felt that Paramount could give him 10 episodes if he needed them. “If I think it takes 10 episodes to wrap it up, they’ll give me 10,” Sheridan said. “It’ll be as long as it needs to be.”

Will Kevin Costner Return To Yellowstone Season 5?

As of June 20, it’s unknown whether Kevin Costner will appear in Season 5, part two. The actor has been vocal in recent months about wanting to finish the beloved Western series. In interviews, he’s also opened up about what happened between him, the show’s creator, and Paramount.

“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” Costner told Entertainment Tonight about finishing Yellowstone in April. “...I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”

During a child support hearing on September 1, 2023, Costner testified that he was offered a sixth season of Yellowstone, but negotiations didn’t go to plan. He claimed at the time that he was offered less money and that there were “creative” issues. (In 2022, Variety reported that Costner was making $1.3 million per episode.) The 69-year-old actor also said via court documents that he was “no longer under contract” for the show.

As for last year’s drama that captivated news headlines, Costner told GQ in May that his actual issue with the show was more straightforward than the media portrayed it to be. When he set out to make Horizon, he said he imagined the four-part feature film to complement Yellowstone. “I’ve always wanted to do this movie,” Costner told the site, “and I was doing Yellowstone. I love Yellowstone.” (The first chapter of Horizon will debut on June 28, 2024, while Chapter 2 will follow on August 16, 2024.)

But he said he was waiting and holding time in his schedule to make Yellowstone when production was delayed for various reasons, including COVID, the writers’ strike, and further disagreements about scheduling. “We very rarely started when we said we would and we didn’t finish when we said we would,” he added.

Then, the show decided to split Season 5 into two parts. “And their big plan was to suddenly do eight now and then in the fall do eight more,” he explained. “I said, ‘I have a contract to do Horizon, and I have people and money.’ I think there was a belief that I couldn’t get it mounted, but I didn’t really care what anybody believed.”

In a recent interview with People, Costner explained that when Yellowstone was pitched to him, it was initially one season long. “I think what happened was the studio didn't want that," he stated. "And because [Sheridan’s] such a prolific writer, he said, ‘I can do that. I can make a series that goes on'."

In response, Costner said that he would “do it for three seasons,” but ultimately ended up “doing it for five.” When rumors started swirling about his alleged conflicts with the show, Costner said he was "disappointed" that no one came to his defense.

"I read all the stories," he revealed to the site. "I was disappointed that nobody on their side... ever stepped up to defend what it was I actually did for them. There came a moment where I thought, 'Wow, when is somebody going to say something about what I have done versus what I haven't done?'"
