Why do peanut butter cookies have a crisscross design on them?
Why is there a crisscross design on peanut butter cookies?
That crisscross design is actually functional as well as aesthetic.
First off, the crisscross is so synonymous with peanut butter cookies that you almost expect it to be there. It is basically also identifying the cookie as a peanut butter cookie.
Here is what makes those crisscrossed marks functional.
The markings from the crisscross actually help the cookie bake more evenly as well as helping the cookies maintain their shape during baking. Peanut butter tends to make the cookies spread and those crisscrosses help to curb the spreading.
How do you make a crisscross design on a cookie?
The design is made with a fork.
You simple take a fork and press it into the cookie dough (horizontally and vertically) before baking.

- When you are selecting your peanut butter, I would suggest avoiding the 'natural' ones. Sometimes natural peanut butter with have added oil in them can make your cookies too oily to enjoy.
- Using a granular sugar alternative that measures 1:1 with sugar and that can also be baked with is essential to the success of this cookie. Feel free to sprinkle a bit of extra granular sugar alternative on top of the cookies to make.
- If you find that the fork is sticking to the dough while you are making your criss cross design on top of the cookies, there is a fix. Simply spray the fork with a bit of nonstick or dip the fork in water.
- It may be hard to tell that the cookies are done baking just by looking at them thanks to the color of the cookie. Check the bottom edges of the cookies for a golden color if in doubt
