The International Monetary Fund departmental paper, "Rise of Digital Money: Implications for Pacific Island Countries," delves into the fast-evolving landscape of #digitalmoney in a diverse region of extremes in size, remoteness and dispersion, highlighting its significant macroeconomic and financial consequences. It provides an overview of the development of #digital #money and #payment systems in Pacific Island Countries (PICs), assessing potential benefits and risks, with a focus on how they can harness digital technology to enhance #financialinclusion and payment efficiency while minimizing risks. To this end, the paper also examines the prerequisites for successfully adopting various forms of digital money and proposes a strategic framework for policy decisions. The paper underscores the potential of digital money in advancing public policy goals, like financial inclusion and improved #crossborder connectivity – given the specific characteristics of the region – while cautioning against the risks of rapid and inadequately regulated adoption. Accordingly, it advocates a gradual, well-informed approach, tailored to PICs' unique monetary and financial circ*mstances, including the presence of national currencies and the maturity of payment systems. Moreover, the paper suggests that a regional approach could help address capacity and scalability challenges in introducing new digital money forms and payment methods in PICs.

📢On September 21, 2023, Alina Aldambergen, Chairperson of KASE's Management Board, spoke at a session called "The Market Infrastructure Universe in 2023 – Part 2. Emerging Markets" during the annual meeting of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).🔸 A. Aldambergen spoke about the pace of development of Kazakhstan's economy and KASE, the achievements of the Exchange, challenges and prospects for further development for the next 5 years.🔸 In particular, the speaker noted the high dynamics of Kazakhstan's economic development, the level of development of the stock exchange infrastructure represented by the Exchange, the central depository and the newly established clearing organization. The speaker pointed out the strength of the Exchange as a universal exchange offering a wide range of investment instruments.🔸 One of the strengths of the Kazakh capital market is the developed base of domestic institutional investors represented by the pension fund, government funds, banks and insurance organizations, whose combined assets total about 100 billion US dollars (available for investment), the fast-growing number of retail investors, taking into account the increased material well-being of Kazakh citizens; the economy of Kazakhstan, which is classified as being in the "upper middle income" category in terms of GDP per capita.🔸 A challenge for the Exchange is the entry of private businesses into the equity and bond market due to the need to meet high requirements for corporate governance and information disclosure, as well as its attractiveness compared to bank lending.🔸 Other speakers representing Latinex and the Ghana Stock Exchange, noted the importance of a forward-thinking regulator in the rapidly changing environment, taking into account the competitiveness of domestic capital markets, the need to increase liquidity in the markets by attracting international investors and creating exchange links with liquidity pools.🔸 One of the acute issues was the prospects for the survival of small exchanges, the risks of takeover by larger exchanges and the prospects for creating unified regional exchanges to increase the attractiveness of domestic equity trading.
