Robert Allen "Bob" Berlin - 2023 - Hart's Mortuary and Cremation Center (2024)

Robert Allen "Bob" Berlin, passed away on November 22, 2023, at the age of 84 in Macon, Georgia. Born to the late Harold Chester and Betty Jaffe Berlin on September 4, 1939, in Passaic, New Jersey. Ever the student, he began his higher education journey early, enrolling at Vanderbilt University at just 15 years old.

Bob's exceptional intellect led him down an illustrious path within the legal realm. He graduated to become a respected attorney and eventually a senior partner at the law firm of Berlin and Hodges, P.C. His integrity and wisdom were further recognized when he ascended to the role of Municipal Court Judge, a position he held with honor for 25 years, along with serving as a pro hac Judge in three other courts. From 1973 to 1974, he represented Middle Georgia District 86 in the State House of Representatives, furthering his commitment to public service.

Alongside his legal career, Judge Berlin served as a Navy Reserve JAG officer. His caring and thoughtful nature also led him to support others as a marriage and family counselor. Bob's knack for guiding others through conflict was unrivaled. Becoming a leader in Alternative Dispute Resolution training and services. His mediation training course had become internationally recognized and revered, attracting students from around the world.

Bob was an enthusiastic teacher, trainer, and presenter, roles he embraced at various institutions including Wesleyan College, Georgia College, Macon State College, Middle Georgia College, Georgia Military College, Central Georgia Technical College, and Herzing College, as well as Mercer University and its School of Law.

Outside the courtroom and classroom, Bob was actively engaged in his community. He was a member of the Forsyth-Monroe County Rotary Club, Macon Exchange Club, and Bibb County Jaycees, among other organizations. His service extended to volunteering at Hospice and Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he held roles as President and member of the Board of Directors and was a mentor to numerous young men and boys over the years.

Bob was a man of many passions. As a testament to his playful spirit, he went to Clown school and became Bobbo the Clown, spreading laughter and joy wherever he went. His commitment to young people shone through as he served as a foster parent, Boy Scout Leader, and Sunday School Teacher, while also participating in the Bibb County Juvenile Court Citizens Panel Review.

An avid Georgia Bulldog fan, Bob enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He was an insatiable reader, a routine runner, and a skilled private pilot. His quick wit was on display during Toastmasters and while indulging in his love for comedy—whether it was telling jokes, engaging in improv, or playing practical jokes.

Bob's spiritual journey also included being among the founders of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Macon. He exercised this cooperative spirit in all areas of his life, showing an openness and respect for various beliefs and ideologies.

Bob Berlin's legacy is one of profound service, compassion, and joy. Whether it was through his professional achievements or the laughter he incited as Bobbo the Clown, his impact on the world was immeasurable. A dedicated guardian of the law, a beacon of knowledge, and a cherished member of his community, Bob's memory will be held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His absence will be deeply felt, and his influence, forever cherished.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Katherine Long Berlin. He is survived by his son, Robert Allen “Rab” Berlin, Jr. (Martha Ann), of Suwanee, Georgia; daughters, Sarah Ellen Berlin, of Macon, Georgia, and Alana Katherine Berlin, of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Brandon Allen Berlin (Paisley), Brittany Ann Berlin, and Brooke Ansley Berlin; great grandson, Boden Clay Berlin; brother, Burgess Lee Berlin, of Union, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
