I’ve been making these old fashioned oatmeal cookies since high school, and they’ve become a family favourite around here. We’ve got the recipe down to an art, and can have these cookies baking in the oven within 10 minutes.
I highly recommend doubling this recipe to share the goodness with others. Making old fashioned oatmeal cookies is a great option for your family staple but also an easy option for holiday cookie exchanges. They also make a great cookie for DIY baked gifts when stacked in a mason jar and tied with a ribbon and a gift tag.

What makes these cookies old fashioned?
The bestoatmeal cookies are soft and chewy through the center with crispy edges. They’re filled with old-fashioned whole rolledoats. Bite after bite, the flavor is a warm blend of nuttyoatsand brown sugar, with hints of vanilla.
Old Fashioned or rolled oats are less processed than quick or instant oats. Rolled oats provide a chewy, nutty texture and flavor, while quick-cooking oats supply a softer, moister finished product.
Either type of oat can be interchanged in oatmeal cookie recipes.
Are oatmeal cookies healthy?
Oatmeal is high fibre. Rolled oatsare a good source of fiber and contain 2 grams of fiber in a 1/2-cup cooked serving. The fiber in theoatshelps lower cholesterol and may lower your risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
You can make these cookies healthier, by substituting apple sauce for butter. I make apple sauce every summer with our abundance of apples and use it for fall and winter baking recipes such as these cookies!
