Manchester City win 2024 Community Shield
Manchester City beat Manchester United 7-6 in a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium to lift the 2024 Community Shield.
The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bernardo Silva.
Manuel Akanji then scored the decisive spot kick for City after a long penalty shootout that went to sudden death to end City’s miserable run in recent Community Shields.
Losing the Community Shield still stings
United players look gutted at losing that on penalties. This didn’t feel like a pre-season friendly at the end.
United had the advantage in normal time and in the shootout, but couldn’t get it done. Fernandes and Casemiro gave Onana instructions on diving when their compatriots were taking. He didn’t quite follow the advice on Dias – Fernandes implored him to stay on his feet, but he dived and Dias rolled the other side.
United have become the first side to lose the Community Shield 10 times, moving them past City's nine finishes as runners-up.
