Have you ever seriously thought about what is in your mouthwash and how easy it might be to make your own? Those two questions are why we decided to do this post for you.
Commercial mouthwash often contains unwanted preservatives, so we have compiled a great variety of natural mouthwash recipes that will surely please most everyone. Best of all, they are full of great ingredients for dental health. In addition, they are effortless to make. So let's get into it!
Homemade Mouthwash
- 1 c. Water
- 1 tsp. Baking Soda
- 3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Pour the ingredients into a glass jar and shake well. Use a funnel if necessary. To use, take a swig, swish for up to 30 seconds, and spit out. You can store this mouthwash in the bathroom.
Disinfectant Mouthwash
- 1 c. Water
- 2 Tbs. Apple Cider Vinegar
Blend all ingredients in a glass vessel then add to a sterile glass jar. Shake well before use. Swish the mixture in your mouth, then spit it out. The product can be stored in the bathroom and should last indefinitely.
Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash
- 8 oz. Hydrogen Peroxide
- 4 oz. Water
Mix all ingredients. Swish mouthwash in your mouth, then spit it out. Mix enough for single use. Get rid of any excess solution.
All-Natural Herbal Mouthwash
Create an herbal infusion by steeping your herbs. Just like making tea, take the dried ingredients, add boiling water, and let it sit for two minutes.
- 2 c. Hot Water
- 0.5 oz. Cloves
- 1 oz. Oregon Grape Root
- 1 oz. Rosemary
In a glass mason jar, steep the dried herbs and boiling water. In the morning, use a piece of cheesecloth and strain the tincture. To use, gargle a small amount and then spit it out. Store in the fridge for up to 7 days.
Simple Essential Oil Mouthwash
- 1 c. water
- 20 drops Essential Oils (We recommend a blend of Cinnamon, Clove, Wintergreen, and Tea Tree Oil.)
Blend all ingredients in a sterile glass jar with a lid. Before each use, make sure to shake well. Shaking helps to distribute the essential oils evenly in the mixture. This mixture should last for years.
Old-Fashioned Antiseptic Mouthwash
- 4 oz. Peppermint Hydrosol*
- 4 oz. Herbal Infusion
- 1 tsp. Thyme
- 2 tsp. Myrrh Gum
- 10 drops Mint Flavor Extract; we recommend using 100% Wild-crafted
*A hydrosol is a water-based liquid made from flowers. This recipe calls for herbal infusions from Echinacea Angustifolia root, sage leaves, and peppermint leaves.
Add the ingredients to a glass mason jar. Lid and shake until well incorporated. Before each use, shake. Finally, place a small amount into your mouth and gargle. Expel after 30 seconds. This recipe doesn't need any preservatives as Myrrh Gum has antiseptic properties.
Whitens and Remineralizes
- 2 tsp. Calcium Carbonate
- 1 tsp. Xylitol Crystals
- 10 drops Trace Minerals
- 10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
- 5 drops Lemon or Chamomile Essential Oil
- 5 drops Spearmint Essential Oil
- 16 oz. Water
Yield is approximately 16 ounces, which should last for about 15 uses.
In a Pyrex bowl, stir together powder and crystals. Add the Trace Minerals and Essential Oils. Then, add water and stir. Use a sterile glass jar and funnel. Pour the mixture into the container. Finally, replace the lid and shake. Make sure that the Xylitol dissolves after about 60 seconds. Always shake this mixture before using it. For storage, place this recipe in the fridge for up to 14 days.
What benefits do these ingredients provide?
- Calcium carbonate powder: remineralizes teeth.
- Xylitol crystals: a touch of sweetness and also cavity protection.
- Concentrated trace minerals liquid: remineralizes teeth.
- Peppermint essential oil: an excellent taste and promotes fresh breath.
- Lemon essential oil: helps to whiten teeth.
- Spearmint essential oil: another great addition to flavor and taste, plus promotes fresh breath.
Tincture Mouthwash
The myrrh tincture helps strengthen gums and combat tooth and gum infections. In addition, calendula cleans and soothes gums and helps with gum inflammation. Also, goldenseal is highly antimicrobial and has lots of astringent properties.
- 1-4 oz. glass bottle
- Funnel (not necessary, but makes it easier)
- 1/2 c. distilled water
- 2 Tbs. vodka
- 1 dropper full calendula tincture/herbal oil -NOT ESSENTIAL OIL
- 1 dropper full goldenseal tincture/herbal oil -NOT ESSENTIAL OIL
- 0.5 dropper full myrrh tincture/herbal oil -NOT ESSENTIAL OIL
- 1-2 drops peppermint essential oil
Combine all the ingredients in a funnel in a 4-ounce dark glass bottle and shake well. Dilute three tablespoons of the rinse in 0.5 ounces of water, and use it as a mouthwash morning and night.
DIY Aloe Mouthwash
Aloe is a potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and can help treat the gums' common issues, such as inflammation. You can also use it to help soothe canker sores and cold sores.
- 6 oz. Colored Glass Bottle
- 4 oz. Organic Aloe Vera Juice
- 2 oz. Water
- 1/2 Tbs. Witch Hazel
- 1 tsp. Baking Soda
- Ten drops Peppermint Oil
Add liquid ingredients to a Pyrex glass bowl that has a spout. Mix with a whisk. Then, pour into a sterile container using a funnel. Remember to shake before using. This homemade formula will last up to 14 days.
DIY Peppermint Mouthwash
Peppermint oil has antiseptic properties that help to fight bad breath and numb pain.
- 4-oz. dark glass bottle
- 1/2 c. distilled water
- Three drops peppermint essential oil
Pour your water and essential oils into a dark glass bottle. Then shake. When using, stir first and take a small sip of the mouthwash. Swish and gargle for 30 seconds. Do not swallow.
