How many feet is a roll of wire fence? ›

Length: The majority of Red Brand field fence products are available in 330-foot rolls, a standardized length in the industry.

As a rule, you should set fence posts about 6' to 8' apart. The spacing of the posts depends on the type of fence you build, the terrain, the purpose of the fence, and other such factors. Set the corner or end post first. Then stretch a line from each corner or end post to align all the posts in between.

If privacy is your main goal, you'll want a fence that is at least 6-feet high to prevent nosy neighbors or curious passers-by from peeking in. To be extra safe, choose a 7- or 8-foot high fence. Before you start building, however, double-check that local regulations allow you to build a fence to this height.

The fence needs to be two feet high to protect against cottontail rabbits and three feet high to protect against jackrabbits. Fence life can be extended by removing it in the fall and storing it for the winter.

Dig post hole so diameter of the hole is 3 times the width of the post (i.e., the hole for a 4” wood post should be about 12 inches wide). The depth of the hole should be 1/3-1/2 the post height above ground (i.e., a 6-foot tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet).

In general bury it about one-third the length into the ground. You need to get under the level of the frost line where the soil does not heave as much as soil at ground level. If you do not go deep enough the fence will sag and eventually fall over. Two to three feet would be about normal for most fences.

The general rule of thumb when setting a post is that the depth of the post's hole needs to be one-third to one-half of the actual above-ground height of the post. So, a six-foot-high finished post ideally needs to be buried three feet into the ground.

Fence strength

If you're penning in large, heavy animals, you'll want to consider a sturdy 12.5-gauge wire. If your animals are easily spooked, you might want to opt for something even stronger, like a 9-gauge. On the other hand, a lightweight 16-gauge wire is ideal for projects like garden fencing or dog kennels.

8 feet high works well in wide open areas of grass + fields. 7 feet high works very well in wooded and landscaped areas. 5-6 feet high works well for garden enclosures of about 100-150 total feet and smaller enclosures. 5-6 feet high also works in areas with difficult terrain, steep hills and other unique situations.
