Dodgers' Gus Varland: Returns to Triple-A

The Dodgers optioned Varland to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday.
The right-hander was called up by Los Angeles on Friday and will return to Oklahoma City without appearing in a game. Varland has six appearances for the Dodgers this season and has allowed two earned runs with a 3:4 K:BB over six innings.

Dodgers' Justin Wrobleski: Promoted for MLB debut

The Dodgers selected Wrobleski's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and he'll start Sunday's game against the Brewers.
The 23-year-old lefty is one of the organization's top prospects and will make his way to the majors after being at the Triple-A level for less than a month. Wrobleski posted a 3.06 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 13 starts for Double-A Tulsa to earn the promotion, and he allowed five earned runs with a 17:3 K:BB in his two outings with Oklahoma City.

Treinen earned a hold against Milwaukee on Saturday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work.
Treinen entered in the seventh frame and retired the side in order on 11 pitches. The right-hander has given up an earned run in just two of his 23 appearances this season, resulting in a solid 2.61 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 20.2 innings. Treinen hasn't shown much rust despite missing all of 2023 and most of 2022 due to a shoulder injury.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Swats go-ahead homer

Vargas hit a solo home run as a pinch hitter in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Brewers.
Vargas batted for Gavin Lux in the eighth inning and came through with a solo blast to give Los Angeles a 4-3 lead. The 24-year-old has been very productive when given the opportunity this season, slashing .349/.408/.651 with three homers, four doubles, nine RBI, 10 runs and a stolen base over 49 plate appearances. Vargas hasn't been a consistent part of the lineup, however, as he's started just once across Los Angeles' past seven contests.

Dodgers' Will Smith: Goes deep again Saturday

Smith went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-3 win against Milwaukee.
After belting three solo homers Friday, Smith smashed a two-run shot in his first at-bat Saturday. Per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, the backstop became the first Dodger to homer in four straight at-bats since Adrian Gonzalez in 2015 and the first major-leaguer to do so since Jose Altuve in September of last season. Smith's two-game power surge has pushed him to 15 long balls on the campaign, tied for third among MLB catchers.

Dodgers' Evan Phillips: Used in eighth frame again Saturday

Phillips (2-0) was charged with a blown save and earned the win against Milwaukee on Saturday. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one batter over one inning.
With the Dodgers up 3-2 in the top of the eighth frame, manager Dave Roberts elected to call upon Phillips to face the heart of the Brewers order. The right-hander couldn't protect the lead, giving up a one-out solo homer to Christian Yelich. Phillips did get credited for the win, however, as a result of Los Angeles tallying two runs in the bottom of the frame and Alex Vesia closing things out in the ninth. This was the second time in the past two weeks that Roberts has called upon Phillips before the ninth inning in a high-leverage situation, so it's clear that the team is comfortable using him in that way. Phillips should still get the vast majority of save chances for the Dodgers, though Vesia has five saves on the campaign and is probably the leading candidate for ninth-inning duties when Phillips is either unavailable or deployed earlier in a contest.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Home run, triple in win

Ohtani went 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple, two runs scored and a stolen base in Saturday's win over Milwaukee. He also drew two walks.
Ohtani drew a leadoff walk in his first trip to the plate before coming home on a Will Smith home run in the following at-bat. The superstar slugger then swiped his 18th bag of the season in the second inning after being hit by a pitch and later added a home run of his own to extend the Dodgers' lead to two runs in the eighth. It marked his second long ball this month and his 28th on the campaign, which is good for second in the majors behind only Aaron Judge. The triple was Ohtani's third of the season and his first since May 25.

Dodgers' Alex Vesia: Secures fifth save

Vesia picked up the save over the Brewers on Saturday, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one.
Vesia entered the contest with a two-run lead and went 1-2-3 through the back end of Milwaukee's lineup to earn his fifth save of the campaign. It was the lefty's first save opportunity since blowing one against the Giants on June 29, and he's now recorded a strikeout in each of his last three appearances. Vesia also hasn't allowed a hit in either of his last two outings. Primary closer Evan Phillips was deployed to face the heart of the Brewers order in the eighth inning Saturday and remains in line to receive the bulk of the save chances for Los Angeles.

Dodgers' James Paxton: Allows two runs over five frames

Paxton did not factor into the decision in a win over Milwaukee on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings while striking out three.
Paxton allowed one run to come across in the opening frame before surrendering just three hits and a walk from that point on. However, one of those hits was a solo home run off the bat of Rhys Hoskins, marking the second start in a row in which the lefty's given up the long ball and third time in his last three outings. Paxton threw only 10 of his 21 first pitches for strikes on the night and walked multiple batters for the third straight start. He'll look to pick up the first win since June 17 (span of three starts) when the Dodgers travel to Detroit next week to take on the Tigers.

Roberts added that Muncy hasn't progressed through his rehab as fast as the team had hoped, and the chances of the third baseman beginning a rehab assignment near the All-Star break have been reduced significantly. A right oblique strain has kept Muncy on the injured list since May 17, and his latest setback once again leaves him without a clear return timeline.

Kelly had a bit of trouble finding the strike zone -- seven of his 13 pitches were balls -- and he allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base via a single and a walk. However, the veteran reliever followed with a strikeout before inducing an inning-ending double play to escape without allowing any runs. Kelly has tossed two scoreless frames through two rehab outings with the Single-A Quakes. It's not clear how many more minor-league appearances he'll be asked to make before being activated from the injured list, but there appears to be a good chance that he'll be back in Los Angeles' bullpen before the All-Star break.

Vargas has two multi-hit efforts over nine games since he was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on June 17. In that span, he's gone 9-for-22 (.409) with four RBI. The 24-year-old is slashing .333/.396/.571 with two homers, eight RBI, nine runs scored, four doubles and a stolen base over 48 plate appearances this season. Vargas could see an uptick in playing time due to Jason Heyward (knee) landing on the injured list, which could force Teoscar Hernandez to play right field on a full-time basis in the short term.

All of the damage came in the fourth inning between a Willy Adames RBI single and a Rhys Hoskins grand slam. Glasnow has allowed five runs in back-to-back starts, though he's avoided the loss in both of those outings. For the season, he has a 3.47 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 143:29 K:BB through 109 innings over 18 starts.
