WELCOME“Shortly before we went to press with this issue came the sobering news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This is a moment that historians will be reflecting on for decades to come, and one that is itself informed by the region’s past. On page 10, Keith Lowe explores the historical background to the current crisis, from tsarist Russia to the Second World War, and we’ll be covering the backstory in greater depth in our May edition, as well as at historyextra.com.Sticking with the Second World War theme, the opening feature of this month’s magazine takes us back to Britain in 1942. While 1940 is often seen as Britain’s (and Churchill’s) darkest hour in the war, Taylor Downing argues that 1942 – a year full of military disasters – was a…1 min

THIS MONTH IN HISTORYPrehistoric phenomenonMade from chalk and decorated with intricate carvings, this 5,000-year-old artefact is on public display for the first time since its discovery in 2015.The drum-shaped object – found alongside a chalk ball and bone pin in the grave of three children near Burton Agnes, East Yorkshire in 2015 – may have been used as sculptural art or as a talisman to protect the dead. Its markings, including three holes believed to represent the bodies, recall an artistic style used in the era in which Stonehenge was built. The sculpture is very similar to three objects known as the “Folkton Drums”, found just 15 miles away in 1889, which were also buried near the remains of a child. These parallels, and the clues that the find may offer about cultural connections…4 min

I feel [that] Hollywood, with its constantly reinforced tropes and clichés, is in part to blame… I can’t tell you how many cigar-smoking Georgians I’ve encountered in scripts, as well as people playing poker. Every corset seems to look like those worn in the 1880s. Lots of bad guys [were] packing revolvers in the 18th century, too, apparently.”Her comments sparked a debate about the shadow cast over our view of the past by the 19th century. Historian and broadcaster Greg Jenner (@Greg_Jenner) agreed that the…2 min
