LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Federal investigators arrested 26 people Tuesday in Louisville as part of a large-scale drug investigation.
According to a news release Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Justice, the arrests were just a portion of the 34 Louisville and southern Indiana residents charged by a federal grand jury with various drug and gun offenses.
Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Sgt. Matt Sanders confirmed Tuesday morning that LMPD officers were assisting the FBI with "a large operation within Jefferson County." The investigation involved areas within the Portland neighborhood, as well as areas near Dixie Highway in LMPD's 3rd Division.
The FBI said the raids were a part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Portland neighborhood residents said agents arrived just after 6 a.m. and brought boxes, a safe and much more out of a home. One person said the whole operation caught them by surprise.
"We speak all the time," Marvin Travis, who lives across the street from one of the homes raided, said of its occupants. "They're playing with the dogs. I never would've thought it. Never would've thought it. If you'd have picked out a house on this block where that type of stuff is going on, I'd have picked the next block. You can never tell."

Bard, Mayes, Shaw, Wordlaw, Kinnard, Boerner, Shanahan and Hill are still on the loose. If convicted, all 34 defendants face anywhere from a minimum sentence of 10-35 years in prison to a maximum sentence of life in prison.
