Preparing to apply for college can be hard and sometimes overwhelming. We get it. We compiled our most frequently asked questions here so you get the answers you need, while also understanding how to navigate our admissions website.

At Rutgers, admission is based on a holistic, comprehensive review of the student’s application and the overall competitiveness of the applicant pool.   • March 15, 2024 is the Rutgers priority filing deadline for the 2024-25 FAFSA, so you should act quickly if you have not yet applied. Submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application (NJAFAA).

  • Rutgers provides a variety of merit-based scholarships and awards across each of our locations. The Scarlet Guarantee program (RutgersNew Brunswick), RU-N to the TOP (RutgersNewark), and Bridging the Gap (RutgersCamden) are our signature last-dollar programs to make college more accessible and affordable at each of our locations.

  • All admitted students will receive financial aid and scholarship notifications through their myRutgers dashboard in approximately spring of the application year.

Understanding Rutgers Admissions

  • First-year students can apply to any of our three campuses through the Rutgers Application or Common App. For more information on how to apply, go here.

  • After submitting your application, you’ll be asked to provide additional credentials and documents so we can verify items like GPA, transfer credits, and residency. These required credentials are necessary for our review of your application.

  • Rutgers is on the Common App for first-year applicants. Visit here for more information on how to apply to Rutgers through the Common app.

  • If you submit your application through the Common Application, you can check your eligibility for a fee waiver in the profile section of your Common App. If you meet the criteria for a Common App fee waiver, your application fee will be waived. If you submit your application through the Rutgers Application, fee waiver eligibility can be found here.

  • Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, maintains test-optional and test-blind policies through 2024. Students who are currently enrolled in high school or graduated from high school less than two years ago, and do not have 12 or more subsequent college credits completed with grades by the application due date and who wish to submit a standardized test score with their application may still do so.

  • Whether you submit your application through the Common App or the Rutgers ApplicationPortal, you can check your application status here. You must log in using your Rutgers CommunityID to check your application status. If you applied through the Common App, you will receive an email from Rutgers (within 24 hours) with instructions about how to set up a CommunityID. Please do not attempt to log in or create an account until you receive that email.

What is the lowest GPA to get into Columbia University? ›

You should also have a 4.15 GPA or higher. If your GPA is lower than this, you need to compensate with a higher SAT/ACT score. For a school as selective as Columbia University, you'll also need to impress them with the rest of your application.

What kind of students does Columbia look for? ›

To not mince words, Columbia is looking for students who are at the top of their class. Even if your school doesn't rank, you want to be the kind of student who seems like the creme-dela-creme. It is similar for GPA. Columbia doesn't track accepted GPAs, but the higher your GPA is, the better.
