These made a great healthy alternative to potato chips and are so easy to make. We devoured the first batch and had to make another. I shall never look at a turnip the same again!

We prefer to air fry our turnip chips for a crispier chip but baked are just as tasty.

CARBS IN TURNIPS

Despite being a root vegetable, turnips are a great vegetable for the keto diet with 1 medium turnip having about 6 net carbohydrates. They are low in calories and a great source of vitamin C.

DO TURNIPS TASTE LIKE POTATO?

I'll be totally honest with you and I don't think that turnips taste like potato raw as they can have a slightly bitter taste. However, when cooked they do make a pretty good substitute but do not taste exactly like potato, but are still a tasty vegetable. I'd say that they are more "potato-like". Seasoning is key with turnips.

We do enjoy turnips as a low carb to potatoes with our air fryer turnip fries recipe.

INGREDIENTS

Grab a turnip, keto friendly oil and seasoning and you are set to make a batch of turnip chips.

For the oil, use a keto friendly oil such as olive oil, avocado oil or coconut oil.

When choosing a turnip, smaller ones are less bitter than larger ones. Choose turnips with the green tops attached and a blemish free skin. It should feel firm and have no soft spots on the skin.

SEASONING IDEAS

For the seasoning we used a variety of spice mixtures. We found that a spicy mixture went well with the turnip and removed any faint bitterness that they sometimes can have. A few ideas are:

  • Chili and lime powder
  • Peri peri spice mix
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Garlic and onion powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Nutritional yeast

EASIEST WAY TO CUT A TURNIP

Use a sharp knife to cut off the bottom and top of the turnip. Place the turnip on a cut side up and use a pairing knife to peel the skin. Cut the turnip in half and thinly slice.

HOW TO MAKE TURNIP CHIPS

These tasty low carb vegetable chips can be made in the air fryer or oven. The thinner the slice, the crispier the turnip chip.

STORAGE

If you don't eat at batch all at once (ahem!) or are making them ahead, store the cooked chips in the fridge in an airtight container. They will last up to 2 days. If you want to "refresh" any crispiness, reheat them in the air fryer for a couple of minutes.
