This double chocolate brownie recipe is easy enough for the kids to help, but I also like making homemade brownies just in time for my oldest to get home from school. There's nothing that makes him smile more.

Homemade Double Chocolate Brownies

Growing up, we used to make brownie sundaes on Sunday evenings, but the brownies weren't nearly as good as double chocolate brownies.

The brownies were served up warm with a scoop of ice cream, drizzled in chocolate syrup with a cherry on top. Yum! Since this recipe is double chocolate brownies, you could skip the chocolate syrup drizzle...OR NOT! ;-)

I think this would be a great idea for a birthday party or other celebrations. There could be a brownie bar with different toppings and flavors of ice cream like: cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, or chocolate almond milk ice cream.

Double Chocolate Brownie Recipe Ideas

One of my favorite things to receive is when people put together the dry ingredients of a recipe into a mason jar and attach a list of the liquid or fresh ingredients needed and baking instructions. It never costs a ton of money, but it's always incredibly thoughtful.

In my pantry, we don't really own boxed dry mixes we can make ourselves. I either have a few jars like this sitting around, or I quickly put the ingredients together. There's really not much of a time differential between store-bought and homemade, and it's usually cheaper to make this type of thing from scratch, so why not!

If you're looking for a thoughtful gift for someone, this brownie mix would be perfect! I could see a mason jar with the instructions in a cute wicker basket with a smaller mason jar full of chocolate chips. Maybe add in a jar of cherries and homemade chocolate syrup for an even bigger surprise.

I was so excited about making these! I never give bad reviews and I hate doing it but this is simply to give others a heads up since there were a lot of quality ingredients wasted. I am a home Baker and bake a lot! I followed this recipe to a t. They came out really dry, and just not good at all! I’m sorry but perhaps 2 cups of cacao is just way too much?

Hi Bee! Don’t feel bad about leaving an honest review :-)

I’m not sure what could have gone wrong for you, we make these often without any dryness. I’m wondering if they just overbaked a bit?

Different ovens can run a little hot, and that really can make a huge difference. Either way, I’m so sorry that it turned out that way for you! Such a bummer!

If you have them still, you could turn them into brownie pops with some icing <3

FAQs

What does adding an extra egg to brownie mix do? ›

If you want to get a little more creative with your brownie mix hacks, add an extra egg to the batter. The extra protein will help thicken up the batter and make it fluffier, creating a more decadent, fudgy texture. You can also add the yolk by itself in addition to the 2 eggs a box brownie mix typically calls for.

Is it cheaper to buy brownie mix or make from scratch? ›

A clever hybrid between cake and cookie, brownies are a dense, chocolaty bar cookie baked in a rectangular pan; they can be fudge-like, cake-like, or anything in between. It was about three times more expensive to make the brownies from scratch than to use a mix, owing mostly to the cost of chocolate and walnuts.

What are the three types of brownies? ›

Brownie textures fall into three general camps… Cakey, fudgy and chewy. Cakey brownies, like the name implies, are light, moist and airy, with a slightly fluffy, cake-like interior. Fudgy brownies are moist, dense and gooey, with almost the texture of fudge, but not quite as compact.

What makes brownies cakey vs fudgy? ›

Fudgy brownies have a higher fat-to-flour ratio than cakey ones. So add more fat—in this case, butter and chocolate. A cakey batch has more flour and relies on baking powder for leavening. The amount of sugar and eggs does not change whether you're going fudgy or cakey.

Should you beat eggs before adding to brownie mix? ›

The butter and chocolate are melted and then the eggs, sugar and vanilla are added. The eggs and sugar should be beaten just enough to break up the eggs and slightly dissolve the sugar.

What if I use milk instead of water in brownie mix? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

Is Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker better for brownie mix? ›

If you like chewy, sticky brownies, I recommend: Betty Crocker Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix. If you like light, less dense brownies with a picture-perfect sugar top that flakes when sliced, I recommend: Duncan Hines Chewy Fudge Brownie Mix.

How to spruce up box brownies? ›

Crushed potato chips, pretzels, and salted nuts stirred in or sprinkled on before baking can add textural interest, plus a little savoriness that can make the rich chocolate flavor more pronounced. A shower of sea salt or flaky salt like Maldon over baked brownies before slicing makes for a dramatic, sparkly finish.

How to make box brownies chewy not cakey? ›

Try using one less egg than called for in the recipe. That will make it more chewy and less cake like.

What are the sixes in brownies? ›

A Brownie Pack was divided into groups of six girls called a Six. Each Six was called after 'little people' such as Elf, Imp, Sprite or Gnome. A brown wool beret was introduced for Brownies in 1950 and stockings were changed to socks.

What are fairy brownies? ›

brownie, in English and Scottish folklore, a small, industrious fairy or hobgoblin believed to inhabit houses and barns. Rarely seen, he was often heard at night, cleaning and doing housework; he also sometimes mischievously disarranged rooms.

What is the old version of brownies? ›

In the early days we heard girls' calls for new age groups and set up Brownies (originally called Rosebuds) for girls under 11. A Senior Guide group for older girls was established in 1916 – now called Rangers.

Why did my box brownies turn out like cake? ›

Another reason your brownies may be cakey is too much mixing or beating during the cooking process. Of course make sure you have a high fat to flour brownie recipe. Once you have your recipe confirmed, If you're are whisking then take it lightly.

Why do you put oil in brownies? ›

This oil acts as the primary fat in brownie batter, giving it that delicious, fudgy texture we all know and love.

Why has my brownie sunk in the middle? ›

Brownies are perfect when the middle is just baked, so it sets to a fudgy, moist consistency - if your flour and baking powder are causing the edges to rise, cook and set too quickly, they will give the appearance of a sunken centre, even if the centre is perfectly cooked.

What happens if you put too much egg in brownies? ›

They give brownies a lighter, drier, and more cake-like texture. If you prefer this over the chewy variety, then go ahead and crack in that additional egg. On the other hand, too many eggs will yield brownies that are hard, heavy, and tough.

How does an extra egg affect baking? ›

If there isn't enough egg, your batter or dough may not be able to hold its structure or could end up overly dry or dense. On the other hand, if there is too much egg, your baked goods could lose their shape due to excess liquid, or have a rubbery (or even overly cakey) texture depending on the recipe.

How many extra eggs can you add to a boxed cake mix to make it better? ›

Use an extra egg: Most boxed mixes will call for three eggs. Use four for a cake that's richer-tasting and moister. This tip is one I use practically every time I make a boxed cake mix. Substitute dairy: Replace the water called for on the package with dairy.
