Cult Comic 1st Appearances And Series | CBSI Comics (2024)

We wanted to bring awareness to comics and comic characters that have a cult following. We surveyed the panel and asked them what their favorite cult comic or series and it did not have to be based off speculating whether it is a good investment. Just having the market awareness of properties that have a fan base is good knowledge to have as you may never know what pops later in the future. Grendel keys have gone through the roof and that property has had a cult following a long time. Kudos to Jack Kornblatt for recommending this topic for this week. We could not mention every comic 1st or series so please share with us your thoughts in the comments section.

*Criteria for Picks: “Members of the Back 9 panel will pick a comic book, comic set, magazine, trade paperback, pulp or graphic novel for their favorite personal pick.”

**Picks are not in order of rank.

Graphic Fantasy #1 1st Appearance Savage Dragon (Non Comic Format)

Savage Dragon is still going with Erik Larson since the 90’s. It’s nearing issue #300 which is an impressive feat. – Peter Renna

Strangers In Paradise #1 1st Appearance Francine and Katchoo

The compelling dramedy is about the adventures of and a love triangle between three friends. The first print of the the first issue of the three-issue mini-series published by Antarctic Press in 1993 is extremely difficult to find and consistently rises in value. – Jason Shaw

Nextwave Agents of H.A.T.E. Series

My pick for cult comic is Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.. If you have not read Nextwave, you are truly missing out. I am not sure I have ever laughed as hard or as often at a comic book series as I have at Nextwave. The first book is also an excellent spec opportunity, as it contains the first appearance of the red-headed version of Elsa Bloodstone (I consider it to be her true first appearance, but that’s a whole other can of worms). Nextwave is both a send-up and celebration of everything that is great and not so great about comics. I cannot recommend it enough, whether for speculation or just pure enjoyment. – Jack

Help! Magazine 22 *1st Appearance of Fritz the Cat.

I’m going with Fritz the Cat. Although not a traditional comic book, this Robert Crumb creation ushered in an era of underground comix goodness. It launched Crumb into the mainstream, ironically, and pushed the envelope by bringing counter cultural stories to the forefront.

*Fritz the Cat it appears first appeared in Help! Magazine, January 1965 but if anyone knows of a earlier appearance please let me know in the comments. – Josias Ocampo

My Nightmarish Little Venomous Ponies and Do You Pooh? Series

Homage collectors keep these prices in the $50+. Both are ridiculous concepts whose small prints regularly sell out. I’m going with the small cult of collectors who keep these homage exclusives popular at cons following the Brian Pulido model from Lady Death. – Chris Nelms

Saga #1 1st Appearance Marko, Alana, Hazel, Prince Robot IV, The Will & Lying Cat

A property that has many millenials as fans. The restart of the series is going to drum things up again. – Terry Hoknes

Earthworm Jim #1 1st Appearance Earthworm Jim

I have never found a copy of this comic in the wild but it is one I keep chasing for as I am a fan of Earthworm Jim. I loved that video game. – Stein

Jason vs Leatherface Mini Series Topps Comics 1995

2 horror icons facing off in a Topps Comic. What is not to love here, 90s, crazy story, great covers, not easy to find….this 3 issue set is on a lot of want lists for good reason.– Van Denby

Dejah Thoris Series

This is a pick based off a retailer perspective, it baffles me how many of these comics sell off an attractive cover or photo cover. Maybe I need to pick up a copy and read it and see if I am missing something. The comic series usually has credible creators and artists behind it. – Phil

Cult Comic 1st Appearances And Series | CBSI Comics (15)

I believe there are five arcs or 5 books, each made up of 5 comics. Optioned and in the hold by Disney, this was made to be an awesome TV-14 level series on Disney +. The 2009 FCBD is the first appearance but the first issue and its later printings are not as common as they seem. When these books hit I am sure that all 25 issues are going to be chased for the folks who now need to complete runs. Keep an eye on the racks and magazine section for this winner from 3rdWorldStudios.
