This recipe is a favorite for my kids. They like these Goulash type recipes where we mix hamburger, beans, corn and tomatoes. With this recipe you will need to cook the hamburger beforehand, and I would highly suggest using a lean ground beef and this recipe can easily be swapped out with ground turkey or ground venison.

We like to top our bowls of casserole with fresh toppings like diced tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream and make sort of a taco bowl type dish. You could also throw this inside tortillas for burritos, in fact that is what I like to do with leftovers, and then I wrap the burritos up in foil and pop them into the freezer and I have quick and easy lunches for another day!

Two birds with one stone…I love that kind of cooking!

FAQs

Is beef stew better on the stove or crockpot? ›

While you can make a beef stew on the stovetop or also in the Instant Pot, I'm partial to using my slow cooker for beef stew, to give the ingredients that long, unattended time they need to become really tender and delicious.

What is the best cut of beef for slow cooking and shredding? ›

Chuck. Chuck steak was practically designed for slow cooking. It comes from the shoulder and upper arm of the cow, so it's done a lot of work over the life of the animal — with its abundant collagen, it's the type of cut that gets tough when grilled quickly, but becomes tender and juicier the longer you cook it.

Should food be covered with liquid in a slow cooker? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

What is the best steak to cook in a slow cooker? ›

Choose a thick cut with a decent amount of fat, like ribeye or tenderloin, for best results. The slow cooker breaks down the steak's fats as it cooks the meat, keeping the steak tender and juicy throughout the cooking process.

Do you have to brown stew meat before putting in Crockpot? ›

"Browning, or caramelizing, meat before putting it into a slow cooker isn't 100 percent necessary, but it is well worth the effort for the most flavorful and full-bodied end result," he says. "The caramelized surface of the meat will lend rich flavor and color to the finished dish."

What is the difference between stew and casserole in a slow cooker? ›

They are basically the same but if we're nit-picking, it's thought a 'stew' is a pan of ingredients simmered together on a stove (stewed), and a 'casserole' refers to the type of pot you use when cooking ingredients together in an oven.

Why is my beef so tough in the slow cooker? ›

“Beef may be tough in the slow cooker if you haven't added enough liquid, or haven't cooked it for long enough,” Kristen Carli, M.S., R.D., owner of Camelback Nutrition & Wellness, tells SELF. “For cuts of meat, the fattier cuts are often the ones that get juicy and tender.

Does meat get more tender the longer you cook it in a slow cooker? ›

Your meat will be juicier and more tender

The longer cooking time and the low heat complement each other perfectly. As a result, even though the meat is cooked for far longer, it doesn't dry out because the temperature is low. As a result, this is the best way to retain all the natural juices of the meat.

What is the hardest cut of beef to cook? ›

Shank. Shank is arguably the toughest, cheapest cut of beef. Located in front of the brisket at the cow's forearm, this beef cut is notable for its sinewy dryness. Due to its lack of popularity, shank is not typically found in retail stores.

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in a crockpot? ›

Place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top. Set the heat level: A general rule of thumb is that cooking on the low setting (170 degrees F for most models) takes about twice as long as cooking on high (280 degrees F on most models).

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Can I overcook beef in a slow cooker? ›

Is it better to slow cook beef on high or low? ›

It usually involves cooking your chosen cut of beef in a slow cooker or casserole dish over a low heat for a long period of time, with the meat submerged in liquid. Tough cuts of meat are ideal for slow cooking as the lengthy cooking process helps to tenderise them.

Taste: For overall taste, the pressure cooker was the hands-down winner. Beef, carrots, and potatoes all retained their rich flavors. After 8 hours in the slow cooker, they emerged bland and seemed to need salt.

Is it better to make stew on the stove or in the oven? ›

Hands-off cooking: One, you don't have to monitor the heat of the stovetop for hours, stirring and covering for the 2 1/2 to 3 hours most stews require. More even cooking: Second, oven-baked stews heat from all sides rather than just from the bottom, which results in faster, more even cooking.

Is it better to slow cook on the stove or oven? ›

Meat, especially large cuts, benefits the most from oven slow cooking. Because moisture loss is minimal, it can help to brown the meat first, either on the stove top or in a hot oven that you then significantly drop for the rest of the cook time.

How long does it take stew meat to get tender on the stove? ›

Place a lid on top, turn heat down to low, then simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
