Cranberry Relish Ingredients and Supplies
To make this fresh cranberry relish, you’ll need a good blender (or food processor), fresh cranberries, an orange, sugar and a small can of pineapple tidbits. That is it! If you prefer a more tart and less sweet cranberry relish you can reduce the amount of sugar or skip the canned pineapple. I love fresh cranberry blender recipes like thiscranberry salsa recipe. Did you know that at one time I thought I had to always cook fresh cranberries like in this eggnog panna cotta? Not so!
How to Make Cranberry Relish
Slice up your orange into eights, removing any seeds and leaving the orange peel on. Wash your cranberries and toss them into a blender with your orange and your desired amount of sugar.
Blend well and stir in crushed pineapple, if desired. Yes, it really is that simple!
You’ll want to cover it and store it in the fridge for several hours to give relish a chance to thicken up and the flavors to settle. It does taste delicious right after you make it but it turns a deeper red once it can rest.
You can garnish it with fresh mint or orange slices if you like but it really is so pretty just on its own. I did take pictures of this cranberry relish without letting it rest so it really will thicken up and get darker if you make it the day before.
I personally liked the flavors at every stage of this cranberry relish recipe, including right after preparing and after several days. I did find it to be a bit sweeter at the start.
How to Serve Cranberry Relish
Wondering what to do with cranberry relish? While it tastes great as a side with your turkey dinner, like this smoked turkey breast, it also makes a great spread for sandwiches, regardless of whether you are enjoying leftovers or just using turkey lunch meat for every day. The flavors would be amazing on top of a sliced deep fried turkey sandwich!
For this sandwich I paired it with some carving turkey from my grocery deli department and colby cheese on a pretzel bun. (Those are my favorite!)
The flavors are phenomenal together and absolutely loved this lunch.
It is really a cross between a spread and a cranberry jam so you can also use it to make simple holiday appetizers. Use it as the topping for this cranberry cream cheese appetizer, or add it to a Christmas charcuterie board. So many options!

To make-ahead: Cranberry relish can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. To freeze: Store cranberry relish in a freezer safe container for 2-3 months. To use, remove it from the freezer and thaw it in the refrigerator.
So how many bags of cranberries should you buy? One 12-ounce bag of cranberries makes about 2 1/4 cups of basic cranberry sauce—in my house, that's enough for about five people. Going the canned route? You'll need at least one can for six people.
There's no cooking involved, just using a grinder or a food processor to grind up and mix together raw cranberries, tart green apples, a large seedless orange, and sugar. It's amazing how good it is! Great with roast turkey, or for leftovers on turkey sandwiches.
When using heavier ingredients like cranberries, a 12 oz bag of cranberries is approximately equivalent to 3 US cups. After all, each US cup translates to 3 ½ ounces of cranberries. This will help you get the best consistency for your cranberry pie.
Either! Some prefer to have it served fresh and warm, straight out of the pot, while others need it completely cooled down to enjoy the flavours. Personally, we prefer cooled sauce.
Yes, you can freeze homemade cranberry sauce—and it works well. It's best to store it in the freezer for up to 3 months; the taste may be affected due to its water content if frozen longer. Keep this in mind when putting away your leftover sauce and use it during this optimal period as part of an easy weeknight dinner.
Both fresh and dried cranberries are safe to feed to dogs in small quantities. Whether your dog will like this tart treat is another question. Either way, moderation is important when feeding cranberries to dogs, as with any treat, as too many can lead to an upset stomach.
The main difference is a sauce is typically blended in a food processor for a smoother consistency similar to a condiment or a liquid. Where as a relish is usually a chunkier sauce and tends to have some amount of sugar or vinegar to act as a preserve.
Try reducing the sauce down even further so more of the liquid cooks off and the mixture thickens. If that doesn't work, add a thickener like gelatin, pectin or a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch whisked into juice or water). Let the sauce cool before refrigerating to completely set.
Top your favorite cracker with whipped cream cheese and a dollop of Cranberry Relish for the ultimate speedy starter. If you have a little more time you can try this Three-Ingredient Cranberry Relish Appetizer with white cheddar cheese.
But that's not the case for prepared cranberry sauces, where prices are up. Lochner pointed out that processors set those prices, not growers, and that there are higher input costs unrelated to berries — like “processing the fruit and getting it to market.” Ocean Spray isn't immune either.
