How do I follow up on graduate admissions? ›

Use a professional tone, and thank them for their time. In your follow-up communication, reiterate your passion for the program and why you believe it best fits your academic and career goals. This is also an opportunity to provide any new updates and how they demonstrate your qualifications and fit for the program.

You are considered a graduate applicant if you hold a Bachelor's degree, and wish to continue your graduate/post-baccalaureate studies in a graduate, certificate, credential or 2nd bachelor's program at Cal State LA.

Application with academic program. Your application is being reviewed by faculty in the academic program you identified in your application. This review may take a few days to a couple of weeks. Also, some programs do not review applications until after an application due date.

For early action applicants, we guarantee a decision by February 15. For regular decision applicants, we guarantee a decision by March 31. Decisions are based on a holistic review and with primary emphasis on an applicant's academic promise as demonstrated by: Completion of required high school subjects.

If an institution has not notified you of its decision by the deadline, wait 7 to 10 days before calling the admissions office to inquire about your application status. Before you do so, assemble a list of all of the possible responses you may receive.

Becoming a competitive grad school applicant requires more effort than becoming a competitive undergrad applicant. Another reason getting into grad school is difficult is because seats in graduate programs are limited—either by funding, faculty availability, or restrictions of the program.

Admission requirements

Graduate studies are more specific, so they have stricter requirements, but the process is relatively simple for both programs. Undergraduate programs require a high school diploma, while graduate ones require a bachelor's degree.

You are considered a graduate applicant if you have previously completed a bachelor's degree or its equivalent at an accredited college within or outside the United States and are interested in a master's degree, doctoral degree, post-baccalaureate certificate or advanced certificate.

If you applied Regular Decision, with deadlines usually at the beginning of January, you should get your admissions decision from mid-March through early April. There are also a handful of top schools who send likely letters to especially strong applicants from the Regular Decision round.
