A lot of times just to survive you put stuff on the table until later, but sometimes the hypothetical is right there and you have to ask it so you know what page you both are on. Other times it's just good practice to game out the hypothetical (like who gets the kids if we both die in a car accident).

It's why I honestly feel it's okay to "lie" in these situations. It only comes up because emotions are already high and someone who is not as involved emotionally will say the wrong answer. When you are personally in that situation, even if you are like DrArch today, you might find the emotional charge of the situation wants you to act differently.

It's a higher stakes version of "does this dress make me look fat?"

This is ironically far more common in areas that are very religious

I got my training at a hospital outside of Shreveport and I can’t tell you how many codes I worked on vegetative nonagenarians from nursing homes because their families demanded it

I think back to the Terry Schiavo case, where her brain was pudding but her family (who didn’t have control over her medical decisions) wanted to keep pretending that she was still somewhere in there and praying for a miracle.

      I wouldn't mind.

I offer my opinion when asked, occasionally when not asked, but try not to be the one making critical decisions for either of them.

I can tell it wears on her too, but she seems to not want to rely on me for help either.

She's also several states away because she is burnt out and can't seem to get ahead and refuses to just let me handle it for her.

Other times it's just good practice to game out the hypothetical (like who gets the kids if we both die in a car accident).

Right I understand that, and I understand discussing the hypotheticals and even disagreeing on where you land. In cases like who gets the kids if you both die, that's actionable and the disagreement has immediate consequences. That's a legal document everyone needs to get in order in advance. You really should for the sake of the kid make a choice in advance and get it squared away.

But if the hypothetical is non-actionable and very very unlikely, like lethal childhood cancer, then you have both the luxury and the opportunity to step back and say "you know what, neither of us are close enough to this to say for sure what we would do". It's not about having an emotional or a logical response to the situation, it's about recognizing that you can't guess your own or your partner's response until the time comes, and accepting their response to the hypothetical for what it is. That shows a lot of maturity.

(edit: maturity that based on your post, you are showing to be clear)

Non-parent opinions an parental decisions can still be valuable. This is especially true when the non-parent is familiar with the son/daughter in question. One thing parents failed to adapt to is when children are old enough to make their own decisions.

Also I'd say that there's no predictable break in the way people shift as they get closer to deciding between medical intervention and end of life care.

It's not as simple as saying that the logical thing to do is embrace end of life care, but people get emotional as it becomes more real and shift towards fighting a hopeless battle.

People shift both ways for both reasons.

My grandmother, in her early 80s, developed breast cancer. She was presented with a crazy aggressive treatment plan, and as the reality of chemo set in, she was absolutely ready to give up. Like, what were her odds of remission? How many QoL years could she possibly have left? We were all prepared to accept her decision.

It was actually the doctors who had to convince her that the 25% chance of beating the cancer was worth fighting for, and she's been in remission for 8 years now and made an honestly incredible recovery.

I think it should be more 'does our hypothetical kid want to or not', and that it shouldnt be a binary choice with zero input from the actual person who has to suffer through the 'misery' (and while one may think 'well I wouldn't want to live in misery', there are possibilities of pain and nausea remeditation so there are certainly situations where it isn't 24/7 non-stop pain and agony until you die, so I don't feel comfortable with someone without any medical knowledge like a parent making that choice without it being properly informed)

I've wasted THREE DAYS on a project because I've been given 3 sets of faulty data and need to keep redoing the whole f*cking thing which is a one off and not automatable. And the "faulty data" is purely because the data manager keeps using the wrong parameters/requirements even though we literally had three or four calls now to discuss the requirements.

Today was lunch with my dad and we went to our favorite sushi place in midtown for the bento lunch.

I'm very fortunate to have a dad who has very progressive views and a minimum of boomer bullsh*t, but he's still a 72-year-old man so he ofc got his bento with fork instead of chopsticks, spicy ranch on the salad instead of ginger, and onion soup instead of miso.

I did the opposite of those things, and I also decided to splurge a little and get a red bean mochi for dessert, and the waiter shot me this...conspiratorial nod. It was the kind of nod that I would have recognized coming from a fellow fat, like "I feel you, brother, it's not a meal without ice cream" but this kid was gangly and rail-thin, and I had the lurching sensation that he'd decided I was a fellow weeb, a brother in arms out to lunch with his anime-hating MAGA brute of a father.
