Rotten Tomatoes is a website dedicated to reviews, information, and news of movies and television series. The name derives from the vaudeville-era cliché of throwing tomatoes and other products at stage performers if a performance was particularly bad. The company has been owned by Flixster, a Warner Bros.

Tomatometer scores fall into 3 easy-to-understand categories: Fresh (60% and up), Rotten (59% and below), and Certified Fresh for films with more than 75% positive reviews that meet other criteria - see the criteria HERE.

On the film review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, films that every surveyed critic considered bad have a 0% rating. As of 2023, only 40 films with more than 20 reviews have received this rating.

Citizen Kane (1941), starring and directed by Orson Welles, has topped several international polls, including five consecutive decades at number 1 in the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound decennial poll of critics. Some surveys focus on all films, while others focus on a particular genre or country.

Fresh audience score. When at least 60% of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher, a full popcorn bucket is displayed. Rotten audience score. When less than 60% of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher, a tipped over popcorn bucket is displayed.

The number doesn't tell you how much they liked it, and the number is skewed by some people accidentally raising their left hand instead of their right hand, and a few people who liked it but refused to raise their hand because they wanted to change the outcome of the vote, and then everyone watching this vote assumes ...

It's not easy for recent movies to get a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating, given the sizeable amount of reviews that are taken into account. That makes Leave No Trace's feat even more impressive. It's the movie with the most reviews featured (a total of 252) to get a 100% score.

The 99% Club: An Ode to the Almost-Perfect Movie

The 99% Club: You'll find it, way past 98% on the Tomatometer, but just before 100%. Inside, a coterie of cinema's practically-finest, movies promising an experience beyond most others – movies that are almost perfect.

A red tomato means the movie received positive reviews. A splattered green tomato means the movies has been negatively reviewed. The popcorn images are from Flixster, the full popcorn container means the audience generally liked the movie.

Other recent series with multiple seasons in the 100% club: The Good Place, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, One Day at a Time, Veep, Fleabag, Jane the Virgin, and Feel Good. Only Murders in the Building season 1 has the most reviews on its perfect 100% score.

A place where all the critic reviews are Fresh, as far as the eye can see, without a Rotten mark to disrupt all the 1s and their attendant 0s in the percentage scores. It's a tough road for a movie to get a 100% with critics, fraught with peril.

So when a movie such as “Black Panther” gets a certified “fresh” 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, we interpret it as a film that is near perfection, while a film such as last year's “The Emoji Movie” that lands around 9 percent, must be a steaming pile of garbage.
