A collection of pregnancy teas including a recipe for NORA tea. (2024)

I’m one of those ladies that, for the most part, loves being pregnant. I love watching my belly grow and feel my baby moving inside of me.

Pregnancy, however, as much as I love it, still comes with some unwanted side effects. Something I’ve learned over the years (and over the course of 9 pregnancies now) is that for so many of my pregnancy ailments, there’s a pregnancy tea for that!

I strive to use natural products whenever possible, especially during pregnancy, so teas have been essential to me when I’m expecting. There are so many different types of pregnancy teas and today I’m going to tell you about my favorites from Earth Mama that will help solve your pregnancy woes!

PLUS, I’m sharing my recipe for NORA tea too!

Earth Mama Pregnancy Teas

There are 5 great pregnancy teas from Earth Mama you should check out.

Pregnancy Nausea Tea

Most moms experience at least some form of nausea during pregnancy, especially the first trimester. I would say that my nausea is milder than others, yet it’s still there for sure!

I also find that I have a lot of food aversions in my first trimester. Morning Wellness Tea from Earth Mama Organics is an herbal pregnancy tea supplement that’s safe for mom and baby and designed to ease pregnancy nausea.

It contains all organic ingredients, including ginger root, spearmint leaf, chamomile flower, orange peel, lemon balm leaf, and peppermint leaf.

I love the flavor of the Morning Wellness Tea. It incorporates just the perfect amount of ginger to ease stomach woes without being too overpowering.

Pregnancy Heartburn Tea

For myself and many other women, the only time we suffer from heartburn is during pregnancy. I feel so bad for people who experience heartburn on a frequent basis because it is NOT pleasant!

Thankfully, there are natural ways to help relieve pregnancy heartburn, including Heartburn Tea. Earth Mama Organics offers a 100% organic heartburn tea that contains spearmint leaf, marshmallow root, lemon balm leaf, chamomile flower, and red raspberry leaf.

I’ve been drinking this tea quite a bit during my current pregnancy and finding that it works very well, especially when I remember to drink 1 cup before dinner and another before I go to bed. It tastes wonderful, so it’s easy to drink it frequently!

If I want to change things up a bit from tea, fresh lemon water is another great, natural way to combat pregnancy heartburn. PS – Earth Mama Heartburn Tea is also great for those of you who suffer from heartburn even when you’re not pregnant!

Red Raspberry Tea for Prepping the Uterus for Birth

I have been drinking Raspberry Leaf Tea since my very first pregnancy. I’d venture a guess that it is the most popular pregnancy tea worldwide.

Raspberry leaf tea has been used for generations to tone the muscles of the uterus so they work more efficiently during labor. It’s believed that regularly drinking teas containing red raspberry leaf during pregnancy will help labor to progress at a steady, even pace.

In my ownpersonal experience, I’ve noticed a correlationbetween drinking red raspberry leaf tea and stronger, more frequent BraxtonHicks contractions.

This a great tea to have on hand after birth as well, to continue to support your uterus postpartum and for subsequent menstrual periods. Plus it tastes great too!

Pregnancy Anxiety Tea

Pregnancy should be one of the most exciting, happiest times in our lives but for many moms, myself included, it can also come with added anxiety.

There’s the stress of finances once thebaby is born, how the new little one will fit into the family’s current dynamics, fears about labor and recovery, the additional hormones flowing through our bodies — these reasons and more can lead to days and nights of feeling anxious and stressed.

Studies prove however just how damaging stress is, so it’s important to look for ways to help you relax during pregnancy. One of the things I like to do is take a nice warm bath at the end of the day and sip Stress Less Tea from Earth Mama Organics.

Earth Mama Stress Less Tea features all organic ingredients, including lemon balm leaf, chamomile flower, oatstraw, orange peel, and red raspberry leaf.

The taste is amazing, refreshing, and perfect to help me relax during the day! It can also be taking after baby is born….you know, when you’re facing another day with a teething infant and “threenager” who’s out to break you!

NORA Pregnancy Tea and Why You Should Drink It

Getting an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals during pregnancy is so important for both mom and baby. Most of us take a prenatal vitamin but sometimes that’s just not enough.

Your body might require more than the amount provided in a multivitamin or it may not be absorbing enough from the multivitamin. Take me for example, with every pregnancy I am anemic and require additional iron.

Luckily, there’s a pregnancy tea for that too! NORA tea!

NORA tea is an herbal tea that contains nettles, oatstraw, red raspberry leaf and alfalfa (hence the name, NORA). It is full of beneficial vitamins and minerals and is highly recommended for pregnancy but can also combat painful periods, PMS, endometriosis, and PCOS.

It’s also great to drink postpartum to help restore your body. I lost a lot of blood during my miscarriage and drank it regularly afterward to help my body recover. Midwives recommend that you start drinking this tea beginning at 16 weeks.

Benefits of NORA Tea include:

  • Guards against anemia
  • Maximizes the health of the liver
  • Lowers the risk of possible complications during the birth by helping to promote proper contractibility of the uterus and release of the placenta (which helps prevent hemorrhage)
  • Reduces tears and the degree of them

NORA Pregnancy Tea Recipe

You can make your own NORA tea at home. You need 2 parts of Red Raspberry Leaf and Nettles to every 1 part of Oat Straw and Alfalfa.

I ordered these herbs in bulk on Amazon, along with a glass tea kettle with a built-in infuser. I fill the entire infuser section of my teapot with the herb blend, then bring a full kettle of water to a boil.

If you don’t have a tea kettle with infuser, another option is to brew it in a glass Mason jar overnight and strain the herbs out in the morning.

The key to getting the maximum benefit to NORA tea is to let it brew for at least 8 hours. Typically I will prep mine before I head to bed and let it sit overnight.

By morning, it’s ready to drink! I try to drink as much of it as possible throughout the day. The more the better, but it’s recommended to drink a quart daily, or at least a quart 4 times a week.

Because of the extended brew time, this tea can be fairly strong. If you find it too much, add some ice to dilute it. I like to drink mine warm (rewarm in the teapot, not the microwave).

Here’s the thing though — I’m a busy mom like many of you! There are days I just don’t get around to brewing my NORA tea ahead of time.

That’s when I turn to Earth Mama Organics Third Trimester Tea. It has all of the ingredients of NORA tea with a few additional beneficial herbs (and flavors), like spearmint leaf, rosehips, and chamomile. It’s perfect for me to put in my travel mug as I head out the door or if I want a mug in bed in the evening while I have my other tea brewing.

It’s also a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to purchase lots of bulk herbs to store.

Benefits of the Herbs Used in These Pregnancy Teas

I mentioned a lot of different herbs that are included in these teas. Each of them has been chosen for their specific health benefits. Here are the benefits for some of the main herbs.

Nettles

The active ingredients in nettles are:histamine, tannin, saponins, acetylcholine formic acid, sterols, chlorophyll, glucoquinine, serotonin, iron, & Vitamin A, C, D and K in an easily absorbable form. Nettles is also very high in minerals, including silicon.

Nettles work as an astringent (reduces discharge), diuretic, nutritive, detoxifier, galactagogue (supports the production of breast milk), decongestant, hypoglycemic & tonic.Nettles strengthen and supports the whole body. It can help people who suffer from a pollen allergy or hay fever.

Studies are also showing that it has a broad range anti-inflammatory usage, so it can help with migraines, arthritis, lupus pain etc. It’s high in vitamins and minerals, particularly iron, silica and potassium, and has shown antifungal effects as well.

As a diuretic, it promotes detoxification and works to prevent bladder infections. It also strengthens the kidneys and adrenals. The high calcium content helps to diminish muscle pain during pregnancy including the legs, round ligaments, cervix, back and also during labor as well.

With its high Vitamin K content, it also is proactive in preventing excessive bleeding after the birth. Because it strengthens the blood vessels and maintains arterial elasticity it helps prevent hemorrhoids and varicose veins, because of this, it also helps to maintain a normal blood pressure.

After birth, it helps in the production of breast milk making it nutrient-rich for baby.

Oatstraw

The active ingredients in oatstraw are: 50% starch, proteins, alkaloids, saponins, flavones, sterols, Vitamin B, silica, & calcium, magnesium, silicon, potassium, & iron.

Although stimulating and energy-giving, oatstraw is also relaxing and an aid to sleep. Oatsrawis also a uterine tonic, and works on strengthening the thyroid and balancing hormone production.

It can be helpful for high blood pressure, varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It is also a soother for the digestive tract. It also lowers blood sugar and is useful for fluid retention. It is one of the best sources of magnesium, helping irritability and calcium absorption.

Red Raspberry Leaf

The active ingredients in red raspberry leaf are: volatile oils, pectin, citric acid, malic acid, tannin, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, & zinc, Vitamin A, B, C & E. It also has the highest known herbal source of manganese.

Red raspberry leaf works as an astringent, tonic, toning, pelvic and uterine relaxant. As I mentioned above, it’s highly recommended for uterine health.Raspberry tones the mucous membranes throughout the body, soothes the kidneys and urinary tract, and preventing excessive bleeding after birth.

Red raspberry leaf also works to stabalize the digestive tract. After birth, red raspberry leaf helps with milk production and recovery.

The tonic and relaxant actions on the smooth muscles of the uterus act to reduce the pain of uterine contractions during childbirth and makes them more effective and productive, shortening the duration of labor. (We can ALL agree that that’s a great reason to drink red raspberry leaf tea, right?!)

Alfalfa

The active ingredients in alfalfa are Vitamin K, iron, chlorophyll, Vitamin A, B-6, E, D, & K, beta-carotene, biotin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, fatty acids, saponins, high in copper.

Alfalfa works as a general tonic, alterative (help with the body’s tissues), and a diuretic. Alfalfa is very rich in trace minerals. It purifies the blood and is a powerful tonic.

It balances the blood sugar preventing the swings of hypoglycemia common in pregnancy. It soothes the digestive tract, and contains the digestive enzyme betaine, while saponins balance the intestinal flora.

Ginger Root

The active ingredients in ginger are Vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, riboflavin, folate and manganese.

Ginger has carminative effects, which means it promotes the release of intestinal gas. One of the biggest health benefits during pregnancy is that it reduces nausea.

This can be very useful during the first trimester! Ginger root is also known to help reduce pain, and inflammation. Ginger is thought to help relieve constipation.

It alsoreduces cholesterol, lowering the risk of blood clotting, and helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Chamomile Flower

The active ingredients in chamomile flowers include potassium, calcium, Vitamin A, folate, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and manganese.

Chamomile promotes sleep and treats insomnia. It helps fight anxiety and depression.

It’s an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Chamomile strengthens the immune system and can help alleviate constipation.
