easy fudge recipe roundup

With the holidays approaching, now is the time for fudge! This no-bake, easy dessert has just a few ingredients, tastes delicious, and can be prepared in minutes in the microwave or stove-top, so it's the perfect treat to make and give.

Package fudge in pretty boxes or containers lined with wax paper for hostess or holiday gifts. Or, keep some on hand in the freezer for parties and house-guests.

On this site, all of our recipes are "easy fudge," or recipes that omit the time-consuming and trickier process of traditional candy making. We instead use substitute ingredients as shortcuts, such as sweetened condensed milk, so you can whip out batch after batch with ease.

basic fudge recipe

We primarily use two different methods of making fudge: Sweetened condensed milk fudge and two-ingredient frosting fudge.

sweetened condensed milk fudge

Combine 2 ⅔ cup chocolate chips with a 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk. Melt in the microwave or on the stove-top (in a heat-safe bowl resting over a saucepan of simmering water). Add a pinch of salt and any flavorings or mix-ins, and pour into an 8-inch or 9-inch square pan lined with non-stick foil or lightly-greased parchment. Chill for 2 to 4 hours until well set. Cut into squares and serve.

frosting fudge

Follow the instructions above, but in place of the sweetened condensed milk, use a can of store-bought frosting! That's it!

We actually have an egg nog fudge recipe that is delicious! I love the nutmeg and rum flavors. Ours doesn't have gumdrops in it. I think gumdrops can go either way... either add a fun bite of sweetness OR be TOO sweet with the egg nog recipe. https://howtomakeeasyfudge.com/eggnog-fudge/

How do you make fudge creamy and not grainy? ›

You can fix it. Just place the fudge mixture back in a saucepan on the stovetop with about 1½ cups of water and slowly melt the fudge to a smooth liquid. Bring the liquid to a boil and then to the soft-ball stage and proceed with your recipe (ie: the cooling and stirring steps).

Why add condensed milk? ›

It provides a concentrated creaminess and sweet, milky flavor to whatever you put it in, without all the excess moisture that you get from regular old milk. That makes it perfect for creamy things that you want to set to a near-solid, like key lime pie, fudge, frozen margarita pie, or caramel.

Why is condensed milk not advisable? ›

Sweetened condensed milk is high in calories and unsuitable for people with cow's milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance. Its sweet flavor may be off-putting for some and doesn't typically serve as a good substitute for regular milk in recipes.

What happens when you use evaporated milk instead of condensed? ›

For the most part, if you find yourself without condensed milk on hand, you can substitute an equal amount of evaporated milk. The consistency will be the same, but since evaporated milk is unsweetened, you'll need to add sweetener to match the recipe's intended flavor profile or to suit your personal preference.

Once a seed crystal forms, it grows bigger and bigger as the fudge cools. A lot of big crystals in fudge makes it grainy. By letting the fudge cool without stirring, you avoid creating seed crystals.

What makes fudge moist? ›

The amount of time you cook fudge directly affects its firmness. Too little time and the water won't evaporate, causing the fudge to be soft. Conversely, cook it too long and fudge won't contain enough water, making it hard with a dry, crumbly texture.

What does cream of tartar do in fudge? ›

Cream of tartar is used in caramel sauces and fudge to help prevent the sugar from crystallizing while cooking. It also prevents cooling sugars from forming brittle crystals, this is why it's the secret ingredient in snickerdoodles!
